Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

At Alwyn we have a whole-school approach to meeting the educational needs of our pupils and above all, we value the importance of meeting the individual and diverse needs of all children within our school.

Quotes from our OFSTED inspection, November 2023

The school has a highly inclusive culture.

Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are supported well.

The school is determined for all pupils to experience success.

If any pupils have barriers to their attendance, the school works closely with families and addresses these in supportive and effective ways

The school identifies pupils with SEND quickly and ensures that these pupils get the additional support they need. The school works effectively with outside agencies to help staff understand how to support pupils’ specific needs, for example through training on autism spectrum disorder. As a result, pupils with SEND achieve as well as other pupils.

We recognise that some of our children will need special provision during their time with us and this type of provision will vary from child to child according to their individual needs. The best way to find out all the things that we can do to support your child is to come and talk to us. Our SENDCo is Wendy Harris and you contact her via the school office.

Information for families about Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP)

Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plans have replaced the former Statements of Special Educational Needs (SEN) and learning Difficulty Assessments (LDAs) from September 2014. The introduction of EHC Plans is one of the requirements from the Children and Families Act 2014.

RBWM Local Offer Information

SEND Local Offer
Every local authority has a SEND Local Offer. The purpose of the local offer is to enable parents, carers, children and young people with special educational needs or disabilities to see clearly, from a single and regularly updated source, the services available to local families and how to access them. The offer covers services from birth to 25, across education, health and social care.

The Royal Borough of WIndsor and Maidenhead’s children's services are provided by Achieving for Children. The SEND Local Offer can be found on the Local Offer website for RBWM.

Special Educational Needs and Disability Register
All local authorities must have a record or register of children with Special Educational Needs and / or Disabilities (SEND) in their area. If you live in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, we encourage anyone whose family includes a child or young person who has a special educational need or disability to register. Young people over 13 years of age can register independently and can remain registered until their 25th birthday.

Everyone on the register will benefit from:
● information about support, services, activities and events
● information aimed at young people with disabilities
● opportunities to have your say about the services that are important to you
● the knowledge that your anonymous statistical data is helping us to plan and improve services
