Supporting your child at home - Science
Science
A great way to develop science vocabulary when discussing weather and seasons would be to take your children on a Science learning walk. Look out for changes in the environment, signs of Autumn, Winter, Spring or Summer and evidence of animal and minibeast activity. Look at the leaves changing colour and falling from the trees in Autumn, the trees with buds and blossom in the Spring and then the green leaves developing in the Summer months. You could also discuss how the weather and amount of daylight changes at different times of year.
Year 1
Year 1 will be learning about the seasons and changes in the weather throughout the year.
The science topic for the Autumn term is 'Ourselves including senses'
During Science Week the children will be looking at animals and how to classify them into five different groups; fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. They will discuss animals that are herbivores, carnivores and omnivores as well as vertebrates and invertebrates.
For the topic on Materials in the Spring term, we will be talking about what things are made of (plastic, glass, paper, wood, fabric and metal) and why these materials are used, eg why use plastic and metal to make chairs and not use fabric or paper? We will be doing a waterproof investigation, making a hat for teddy to wear in the rain.
In the Spring and Summer term we will be looking at and planting seeds to grow into flowers. We will be looking at what plants need to grow. You could plant bulbs in your garden and watch them grow, encouraging your child to water them and treat them with love and care.

In Science Week the children will be studying seeds and bulbs. They will plant bulbs and begin a bulb diary.
